Recently, Susan and I made another trip to Hungary to visit colleagues. This time it was bitter-sweet. It was sweet because we got to visit Penny in Pecs where she has lived and served at the Gandhi School for three years. It was bitter because Penny's three year term of service is over and she's about to begin a new chapter of her life back in the States. We are thankful for having the opportunity to be with Penny as she said some goodbyes to her students and to see the love and impact they've had on each other over the years. Neither the students nor Penny will be the same as a result of their lives meeting and intertwining. Penny has been an amazing friend to us as she's encouraged us and has been an instrument of comfort and guidance as we began and continue to serve in Bucharest. Thankfully this has just been the beginning of a life-long friendship. Her presence on the team and in Pecs will be missed!
The Gandhi School is a private school that provides education for students particularly, but not exclusively, for Roma students. Due to substantial financial support from various and diverse supports, both private and governmental (European Union), the school is able to not only provide a quality education to a people group who are highly discriminated against, but they also provide meals and lodging during the week while also paying their way home for the weekends. The school also has a very impressive campus. All throughout the school you can see how the students have an ownership over the buildings through beautiful and diverse artwork.
Taking the place of Penny will be Glenn and Clista Adkins from Greensboro, SC. Glenn will be teaching music and Clista will be teaching English. Both are bringing a lot to the Gandhi School and to our CBF team as well.
Please keep Penny and the Adkins in prayer as they make life transitions and continue to follow Jesus' call in mission.
